Anyone know of a tutorial anywhere for encoding and rendering video for the web in 2021? I'm really struggling to get video on Safari iOS working well.

@moiety Sure, but what settings for maximal compression and minimal quality loss?

@andi @moiety
I now a bit about ffmpeg... But it's late. Tomorrow ?

@andi @moiety
Also: VP9 would work well. I love it. But no GPU acceleration. And AV1, but I know nothing about those

@eject Lmao right?? Good ol' Safari, keeping web standards FRESH

@eject @andi like, have you ever seen them in the same room?

@andi @eject i don't think this is a safari-specific thing

doesn't mean i like it, but it's true of all major browsers

@00dani @eject I'm willing to admit I'm being overly feisty about this because I've spent all goddamn week fighting Safari weirdness without access to an iPhone because my newsroom is happy to piss away a grand paying for lunch with far right nationalists but £50 for an iPhone 6SE is too damn difficult. 🙄

@andi Handbrake would be a convenient means of side-stepping the issue. =:) The tooltips for the more advanced settings explain what each does, or you can use the presets. For a top notch encoding, be prepared for multiple runs to establish the optimal quality/filesize for that specific source file.

@porsupah I've been using Handbrake! Alas I usually end up with bigger files than when I started... 🙈

video encoding

@andi Ack! Are you using the advanced options? I tend to prefer a bitrate cap, so you're guaranteed not to hit spikes, but constant quality seems to work fine too, often with a higher value than they recommend (ie "lower quality").
