It's actually very simple, the "right" answer is no ​

With all federation services like Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey etc etc they all handle the same "basic rule": Everything BUT the hostname can be changed after it starts federating! Since it will break federation with already existing connections 😉

Is it possible/recommended to copy all user and post data/information to the new instance, so that post history can be preserved on the new instance?

@realcaseyrollins @andi I don't think so ​ Everything but posts can be migrated from a user perspective! In that case it would be all "new" accounts 😉

Tech it would all be possible ofc but it will only have a "local" view for that matter, older posts until this time(current) will not have federated yet until looked up manually from another instance for example

@realcaseyrollins @stux @andi The only instance to successfully pull this off was neckbeard.xyz to bae.st and it took them a week or more of database fuckery to get it done.
