normies doing psys

I keep seeing articles about psychedelia going mainstream, with "hip" corporate leaders or whoever doing mushrooms in Jamaica or ahayusca in South America or whatever, and on one hand it feels like this can only lead to a subculture I love being commercialised to the benefit of traditional monied interests (like with weed in Canada), but OTOH maybe if enough CEOs have terrible fucking trips they might actually learn about "empathy" and the world would benefit as a result? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think there's sort of a medicalisation of drug culture as it becomes mainstream, with the avoidance of irregularities and side-effects a priority. But the side-effects are the entire *point* of doing psychedelics; even the roughest trips I've been on, I learned a lot from. Sometimes your brain is silently screaming and psychedelics let you hear that screaming, which can be extremely off-putting, but can direct you towards things about yourself you need to work on...

@andi the bad news is psychadelia was always san francisco yuppy culture and it’s everyone else copying them

@zens Idk, it feels more like they're copying the legalisation model from weed more than anything cultural. Most of what I'm reading about seems intentionally *devoid* of culture, almost an attempt to de-hippie-ify it. I write this as someone who spent 2 years working in a Canadian head shop during the naughts and edited for a medicinal pot magazine, the focus was very much to make its use appear respectable.

@andi that sounds good. can’t wait to buy a bag of mushies at the 7-11

@zens The twist is that they're delicious but are stripped of any potency.

re: normies doing psys

@andi sadly results from Burning Man suggest otherwise

re: normies doing psys

@doop ... ... ... Yeah that's a pretty solid counterpoint you got there.

re: normies doing psys

@doop Tbh tho doing psys at a festival is much different than doing a heroic dose in your friend's basement. Again, the point I make earlier in the thread about filing the sharp edges off the experience being a mistake is salient — a "I wanna go whoaaa at Shpongle" experience is much different than a "I'm going to have a proper Set and Setting with friends and really explore my mind" dose, which is more what these articles on therapeutic use are discussing.

re: normies doing psys

@andi Even if doing psys does in itself always move people in an unambiguously better direction, if it mainstreams in a society set up to grind the "return on capital" stat at the expense of all else, then any effects other than productivity boosts will get hedged out as "side effects", cf corporatization of meditation, or the idea of microdosing as an anxiety-reduction measure without any of the unhelpful "side effects" of actually wondering wtf you're doing in life
